Since its founding in 1824, no one has known the relationship between spirit and wood better than The Macallan. At the heart of the way we do things is our core philosophy of ‘necessary excellence’ a practical passion applied in extraordinary ways.
Based in the heart of Speyside, it was one of the first legally licensed distillers in Scotland.
Unflinching commitment to put sherry casks at the heart of this extraordinary single malt give a unique depth, complexity and richness of flavour, unrivalled by others.
The Distillery
The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then it has built a reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies.
The distillery, nestled above the River Spey in the heart of Speyside and within the grounds of Easter Elchies, was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. The original name of the area was “Maghellan”, taken from the Gallic word “magh”, meaning fertile ground and “Ellan”, from the Monk St.Fillan – who held a close association with the church that stood in the grounds of The Macallan Estate until 1400.
Having launched its new £140m ground-breaking distillery in 2018, it has seen fans and comrades from all over the globe visit for its exceptional tour experiences that are on offer to the public. From exclusive access to the Cave Priveé to The Macallan Boutique, it’s a distillery every whisky fan should visit!
