The Athletic Arms

The Athletic Arms is an Edinburgh legend and is better known locally as the Diggers because of its proximity to two Edinburgh cemeteries – gravediggers would quench their thirst here back in the day.

The pub was traditionally known for great ale, but as most people now realise, pubs that take pride in their beer also take pride in offering great whisky and the Diggers certainly does that.

The current owner has had the pub for just over seven years and has grown the whisky collection to some 250 single malts, which are served in the traditional larger 35ml measure.

The pub dates back to 1897 and retains traditional features including a marble bar top, wooden floors and eight polished tall founts (pronounced ‘fonts’) – one of only a handful of pubs in the Capital who still use them.
